Mistral AI has closed a €3 billion Series D round at a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion, a sum the company describes as the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, with EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity as co-leads. American investors including a16z, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, Advent, and BlackRock also participated, alongside the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as a new backer.
The funding reflects growing commercial demand for what Mistral frames as sovereign AI infrastructure. The company, which now operates in 20 countries, is targeting governments and corporations that want to control which AI models they use and where their data is processed. Mistral plans to scale compute capacity, including a goal of building 1 GW of compute infrastructure in Europe by 2030, and recently introduced tools allowing customers to select the regions where their queries are processed.
French President Macron publicly endorsed the round as advancing a "third way in AI" between U.S. and Chinese dominance. For legal professionals tracking AI regulation and procurement, Mistral's positioning around data residency and model provenance signals a maturing market for jurisdiction-conscious AI deployment.
