Meta's AI Misses Hundreds of Child Abuse Ads, Some Using Real Kids' Images

Meta's artificial intelligence tools designed to detect harmful advertising have failed to prevent hundreds of child sexual abuse material ads from running across Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Messenger, according to new findings from the nonprofit Tech Transparency Project shared with WIRED. Researchers identified more than 250 additional CSAM ads appearing on Meta's platforms since August, including some identical to ads Meta had already removed. In total, more than 350 such ads have run since late last year, with many linking to AI "nudification" apps connected to Chinese developers.

The ads followed a consistent pattern: images of real minors were morphed into graphic sexual video content, with some victims identified as American teen influencers, a stock photo model labeled as a preteen, and a member of a European royal family. In several instances, researchers say Meta took up to a week to act on reported live ads, during which those ads accumulated hundreds more views.

The revelations have drawn responses from US senators, multiple state attorneys general, and Australia's eSafety regulator. Meta, which is simultaneously appealing a court ruling that would mandate improved CSAM reporting processes, acknowledged receiving under $5,000 in related ad revenue and stated it does not tolerate nudification apps or child exploitation content.

Study: Employers, Not Workers, Capture Most Workplace AI Gains
